Project Description

Matsushita Otoman (Hakata, active until 1862)

Smaller than some of his tigers and with better carved paws, suggesting a relatively early date.  The netsuke is well worn with most of the inked stripes rubbed away, though it retains a pleasing stain.  The inside of the mouth is coloured with red pigment. The canines and tongue are sharp. The eyes are bulbous inlays of caramel coloured horn with pupils hollowed out and painted at the back

Signed with two characters. Hakata. Circa 1840

Height: 3.2 cm
